The date was set, by initiative of the WHO, to October 19, thus recognizing globally the World Day of the Fight Against Breast Cancer.
The most iconic symbol of breast cancer, the pink ribbon, originated in the 1990s. It is said that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker in honor of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of this disease and focuses on the fight against breast cancer, was the first to use and display it.
